A bill making its way through the Florida legislature will provide UF with flagship status and diminish the value of all other Florida schools (thereby diminishing the degrees alumni hold at these schools). Universities that carry the flagship designation will generally receive preferential treatment when it comes to state and federal funding decisions, as well as decisions to grant special programs. On November 3, long-time defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews announced his retirement after 26 years at Florida State. In his football career, he has coached nearly 80 players who have gone on to play in the NFL, 18 of them first round NFL Draft picks and nine of whom have been top 10 picks in the NFL Draft. Myron Rolle was named FSU's third Rhodes Scholar in four years; that's more Rhodes Scholars than all universities in Florida combined. In this past 2008-09 academic award year alone, FSU students were awarded one Goldwater Scholarship, one Truman Scholarship, one Udall Scholarship, two Boren Scholarships and eight Fulbright Scholarships.
